Greetings J sailors! I had an unfortunate incident with a rock this past summer, which resulted in damage to my J24 NOW. I have another J, so I will still be racing with you all, and NOW is available whole or as parts. Everything is located in Vancouver, BC.

Prior to this rockin’ hit, CAN 182 was a drysailed race winner. It has a beautiful epoxy bottom (minus the not so beautiful parts), modern mast (I think is a 1998 mast, but I am not sure) with calibrated Ronstan turnbuckles and max length forestay, full-forward and optimally shaped keel, faired rudder, and all the other fixings you expect from a Western Canadian Champion.

The not so good parts are the gouges in the epoxy and fiberglass just aft of the bow knuckle from running up on an island submerged by a very high tide, the matching gouges on the bottom of the keel, and the associated cracks for and aft of the keel/hull joint. The piece which connects the spreaders to the mast is bent and needs to be bent back or replaced. The forward bulkhead is also showing some early signs of rot, but fixing that would be up to you. Currie Yachts, a quite expensive repair shop here in Vancouver started the repair work, and has quoted $7000 to complete the work while keeping the boat under minimum weight and within class rules. You could easily make this boat a good cruiser with a few cases of beer, a couple buddies and two weekends. If you know what you are doing, and have a class measurer inspect your work along the way, you could get this boat back into top racing shape for little investment beyond your own time.

For the boat, with no trailer, and one set of decent Wednesday night/OK weekend racing sails and no outboard or trailer, I am asking $4000, which is below the value of the parts. I would rather sell it whole so that we can have another boat in the fleet, but I am also happy to sell it as parts. If you want the hull only (maybe to build up a very cheap cruising boat), it is $1000.

The parts that are available are as follows, all parts in Canadian dollars, delivery negotiable, obo:

Pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/nigel.tunnacliffe/JStuff?feat=directlink

Mast (1998 or thereabouts), complete with excellent condition halyards, max length forestay, and Ronstan calibrated turnbuckles: $2000

Rudder, old style pintles, faired with Carl’s Boat Shop tiller: $300

Hall spars race motor mount (never installed): $75

White plastic toe rails (brand new): $350

Original teak toe rails, recently cleaned, sanded, and oiled: $200

Original boom, white, showing signs of wear, outhaul sticks a bit (can be fixed fairly easily): $250

8:1 boom vang: $200

Pushpit/pulpit/optimum height stantions: $200/200/40

Old style hatch covers, condition not super good but they work: $100

Front hatch, excellent condition: $150

Lopez blocks: $200/pr

Jib blocks (one is missing the little black plastic runner, but works without it): $100/pr

Harken windward sheeting traveler car and track: $200

Lewmar 16 primary winches, meticulously maintained: $500/pr

Cushions, decent shape, red: $200

Aluminum min weight tapered spin pole: $350

Old-style spin pole, slightly bent: $50

I also have a full set of race running rigging in good shape, various blocks, main and jib cunninghams, several sets of sails (which I will list later once I assess their quality, but they will be in the $300-$800 range per sail), and various other bits and pieces if you are interested.

Nigel,
Sorry to hear about your unfortunate meeting with the rock. I aquired an early '79 J 24 late last season. Do you know if the life lines are identical over the years? If so are yours is good shape and what would you let them go for? I could also use the jib cunningham. my hatches are pretty beat up, are you flexible on your prices?
Please get back to me when you can. I live in RI and shipping would need to be arranged.
Thanks, Walter

The hatches are spoken for. The jib cunningham has not been, nor have the lifelines. Lifelines are still definitely safe and usable, but nowhere near new. Maybe $100, and $100 more for the jib cunno. email me if you want to buy these: nigel@gefree.ca

Hello Nigel, sorry to hear of your misfortune however you are helping others to make their "J's" better.  I need a new(er) bulkhead.  I have hull #27 and she's starting to rot from the bottom up.  Would you be willing to remove yours, cut it in half and ship to Wisconsin?  Assuming yours has no rot in it?  Also, I am looking for some electronics like depth and speed.  You got that available?  Let me know at kiehmo@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,

Joe

Are the Lopez blocks really Lopez blocks because there are knockoffs out there? Just curious as I have a friend who wants a pair

Are the toe rails gone? Teak (if in pretty good shape) or plastic, I could go either way. I am in Texas so shipping would be required...

Thanks,

Eric

The tapered pole is still for sale. I think it is about 10 years old, and it is minimum weight just like the carbon poles. I am not sure what you mean by track size... but anyway, it is in great shape.

I would be into buy the old boom, and possibly the new boom if the old one is already gone and I can't find another. It would need to be shipped to Berkeley, CA. Still available?

Sorry about your boat.

I am way more than interested in the Rudder. My partner and I snapped the rudder on our boat 2 weeks ago. Hard on a 12 knot wind doing about 5 knots. It sounded like a shotgun blast. Unfortunately I was on the foredeck and took a beating. I would also be interested in the mainsheet if it is available. Shipping to Texas may be a fortune but we are patient . Slow ans cheap is always good!

I still have the booms, but shipping is quite pricey since it is oversized. I can get a quote if you like, just a heads up.
I don't have the rudder, but I do have the mainsheet. I will check shipping costs and get back to you. For the fastest response, email nigel [at] gefree [dot] ca
