Considering purchasing a J24 here in the LA California area. Most of my sailing will be done outside of the breakwall and would like to make trips to the Channel Islands (min 26mi open water). How does the J24 perform in rough conditions? How "safe" is the boat in open water? Any input is appreciated.

Hi Joey,
I have been a J/24 owner for 13 years and have sailed my boat- and others - in a wide variety of conditions. It is my opinion that the boats are very safe under most conditions. You may have heard that the boats have sank in extreme conditions. In all these cases the boats were being raced hard in very windy conditions and skippers elected to put up their chutes and go for it. Basic safety precautions to observe are to be sure lazarettes are securely fastend, everyone wears a PFD and you keep the hatches closed. I am sure you will get others comments here but suffice it to say that I trust my boat.

Hi Joey,

Most any sea craft is usually more capable than the skippers that own them.  That being said, equip your boat with as much safety gear as possible for blue water sailing and think in terms of survivability for various events such as a large hole or loosing the mast.  You can add enough flotation to a J to keep her from sinking.  Think of each trip as a very long one to a distant country far away.   Plan for the long voyage and be happy when it's over in 6 hours or so.  Always file a float plan with your local Marina or trusted freinds.  Make contact with someone when you arrive at destination "B".  No matter what, always stay with the boat even if land is a stones throw away.  Be sure to buy a cheap insurance policy by the name of EPIRB.

Yes a J boat is very capable in the right hands.

Don't forget to have fun!

we racing in australia and in winds up to 30 knots. J24's are a fantastic sea boat even in big sea's When running downhill in 30 knots crew weight and balance is the key. best speed so far is 16.5 we are hoping to crack the 20 sometime.
