European Championship at the Royal Western Yacht Club – Day 1

The opening day of the J/24 European Championship started in what only can be described as champagne sailing conditions in this year’s host city, Plymouth. The 37 boats were greeted by sunshine and the prospect of force 5 conditions for the day and were not disappointed during the three races held south on Plymouth breakwater. Unusually, for the highly competitive fleet, all three races got underway safely with no sign of a black flag being raised. Race Officer David Lovegrove said, “I was very pleased with the behavior of the fleet. Those who chose to head back to the breakwater gained best from the tide and the wind shifts.” The top three are Phoenix GBR 4242 Andy Taylor, Cocoon GBR 4269 Nick McDonald and Vitesse GBR 5467 Manfred Konig. Phoenix said of the first day of racing, “It’s has been a fantastic day, great breeze and excellent courses set by Race Officer David Lovegrove and his team. The competition is exceedingly close with every place hard fought. We can’t wait for more of the same. Up and down the fleet, the racing was close and every good tack and mark rounding made a difference.” The results at the end of the day show that the fleet is closely matched…its competitive racing at its best!
